Exploiting e-commerce in rural areas via Mobile Money

“No one will be left behind”
According to the e-Conomy SEA 2018 report of Google and Temasek, the size of Vietnam’s e-commerce market in 2018 was $ 9 billion. The average annual growth rate in the period of 2015 – 2018 was 25% and the market will reach US $ 33 billion by 2025. The size of Vietnam’s e-commerce market in 2025 is the third in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia (100 billion USD) and Thailand (43 billion USD). However, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are accounted for 70% of transactions. The scale of e-commerce in other localities, especially in rural and isolated areas, is very small and the gap is increasing. Unlocking – exploring the rural e-commerce market is the key factor to help accelerate and sustain e-commerce in Vietnam. One of the major barriers of e-commerce in rural market today is payment segment. The policy of the Government and the State Bank for universalization of payment in the rural area through Mobile Money with the participation of telecom operators including VNPT will help “people in the city can buy a bunch of bananas from the garden of a farmer in any village across the country. Farmers can also sell their product with higher prices” said Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung. Mobile Money will contribute an important or even the key part of leveraging e-commerce in rural areas.

*Mobile money: the electronic money on a mobile subscription is essentially e-money or an electronic wallet, but does not have a bank account link.
